Ustream gets $75 million in funding from Softbank
Ustream, the online service that lets folks broadcast live video from their computers or iPhones, has picked up $75 million in funding from SoftBank of Japan.
Ustream co-founder John Ham says the funding will enable the company to "accelerate our growth," which has been on a tear of late. In December, Ustream got its live video app into the Apple iPhone store, and saw 50 million viewers showing up for live Ustream shows. "We saw a tremendous uptick," he says.
Ustream has been a new player on the award show circuit, with ABC and NBC streaming awards arrivals for the American Music Awards and Golden Globes on Ustream.
Ham eyes potential of more live streaming with Apple's new iPad, the tablet computer that resembles a big 9.7- inch iPod -- but doesn't have a camera or USB slot.
"I see people streaming soccer games on their iPhone, and watching on the iPad," he says. "That's going to be really exciting."
